Can there be comedy through a funeral? The author Pavlos Matesis presents such an absurd situation in a scathing satire. A one-act play spiraling around black comedy which it tactfully overcomes to reach satire, The Ceremony was awarded the National Theatre Prize in 1966. On stage we see the relatives of the departed and the maitre struggling to settle all those countless details that in the end will present a "decent" funeral. However, their only major concern is that “decency”. The departed is but an excuse, a pretext to show off their financial status, that is why they want everything to state its cost - the coffin, the wreaths, the clothes, the funeral home, the dishes, the beverages.
